Update 29th May 2011Cleaner, Greener Appleby We have submitted an entry for the Cleaner & Greener village award, which is one category in the Village Achievement Awards (formerly the Best Village competition) run by the Leicestershire Rural Community Council. We’ll be making a presentation to the judges on 22 June at 2.30pm in the Church Hall and we'd love to see some of our group there to help and to give us moral support! Appleby Present to Leicestershire Groups Our Thermal Imaging project was the subject of one of the presentations at the Rural Community Council's 'Sharing Our Stories' evening, run by the Communities Cutting Carbon team in Leicester on 26th May. The presentation, and others from the day, is available here. Update 7th March157 people attended the exhibition on 5th March, where they were able to view the results of the survey and take a look at the image of their own house. If you missed the exhibition you can still apply for a copy of the image taken of your house. Email marilyn @ applebymagna.org.uk with your name and address and you will be sent one by reply. Sorry, but pictures are only available for your own property. Here is a downloadable pdf file containing the display boards from the exhibition, which includes a brief analysis of the results. More press coverage: This is Lichfield and a mention on the Rural Community Council's web site (scroll down to 5th March) Exhibition - Saturday 5th March at the Church HallThe results of the thermal imaging survey will be available for everyone at the exhibition on 5th March. If you are a resident of the village you can see an image of your own home (but only your own!). There will be displays of the overall analysis, comparing different building styles and eras, and exhibits from the council's Green Footprints team, the Rural Community Council and the National Forest. There will be plenty of advice and activities, and refreshments too, all free of charge. You will be able to order a more detailed analysis of your own home and talk to the surveyors who did the work. We've had good press coverage in the Ashby Times, Tamworth Herald and Leicester Mercury and a very positive response from the local council and the Green Footprints team, as well as support from the Climate Change officer at the Rural Community Council. The project is a partnership between Appleby Magna Parish Council and Appleby Environment. It is supported by a Climate Friendly Communities grant from the Communities Cutting Carbon project, run by Leicestershire County Council and the Rural Community Council.
1st January 2011 The Parish Council, supported by Appleby Environment, has been successful in obtaining money from the County Council & Rural Community Council for a thermal imaging survey of buildings in Appleby. This will take place in the next few weeks – exact dates depend on the weather. No access to property is required and all findings will be presented anonymously. During such a cold winter we are all concerned with saving money on our energy bills while still keeping warm. This survey will help us identify where we are losing heat from our houses. If we tackle this not only will we save ourselves money but we will also be helping to address climate change (which is still happening despite the weather!). If your property is visible from the street then it will be included automatically. If it is not and you want to be included please contact Marilyn or Sonia (phone numbers and email addresses below) straightaway. There will be an exhibition in the Church Hall on March 5th with displays of the findings and lots of practical advice. If you want to know more about our activities or how you can help with this project please download our latest newsletter. If you want to know more about thermal imaging and the practicalities of the survey download a questions and answer sheet. Village QuestionnaireOver the summer, Appleby Environment asked people in the village what their main concerns were about the environment and the place we live. At our meetings and the stall at the village fete, we learnt that there is a lot of interest in buying local produce, and a concern about our declining public transport service. So we decided to do wider research on people's attitudes to these issues, and to give everyone in the village a chance to be heard. The Village Questionnaire was distributed door to door during October, and the results have now been collected and collated. From the 470 households receiving the questionnaire, 153 responded, and a summary of the response was presented at an open meeting in the Church Hall on 18th November. Here is a copy of the presentation. (pdf file - requires acrobate reader) What's next? Several good ideas emerged from the meeting, in particular relating to innovate ways of providing transport to Tamworth (the place most people want to go), and ideas for getting together people with a surplus of produce from their gardens and allotments with the people in the village who want to eat local food. We shall be looking at these options over the next few months. We'd like to the the Parish Council for supporting us with the village questionnaire, and all the residents who replied with their views. If you want to be kept informed of our progress, or help with our work, then please contact us (details below). We would like to thank Appleby Magna Parish Council and Mawby’s Lane Stores for their support. Contact Details Think Globally . . .
