As we approach the conker season again, will parents please warn their children against throwing in the Churchyard.  We welcome children coming and harvesting the conkers but we have insufficient funds to repair any accompanying broken windows.

Appleby Environment

Following feedback we have received from people about their problems with public transport in Appleby, and expressing an interest in buying local produce, we are going to circulate a questionnaire to each house in the village.  This is to find out more about local shopping and transport needs and preferences, so we can understand these better, and direct our future activities at the areas that will be most helpful to people.  We hope everyone will take part and fill in the questionnaires when they arrive at the end of September.

This project is backed by the Parish Council and we are very grateful for their support.

We are looking for more people to distribute and collect the questionnaires.  Please get in touch with us if you would like to help.  We are also interested in hearing from anyone who grows their own food and has produce to spare.

Happy Hedgehogs Pre-School

We would like to say thank you to the Scout committee for letting us use the Scout Hut and their facilities in the last three weeks of term while the Church Hall roof has been going under renovations. The children enjoyed their time there and especially the outdoors. We re-open in Sept and have vacancies for children aged 2 years to rising 5's. If you would like your child to attend please get in touch on 07803 962795 for a prospectus.

Appleby Magna Parish Council

A new seat has been installed in Top Street with a dedication to Steve Burton.

The waste bin (situated by the bus shelter in Mawby’s Lane) has again been vandalised and destroyed.  What is cause for concern is that at the same time, a wooden telegraph pole (opposite the Alms houses) was set alight – thank goodness the damage was nominal; but this could have created a disaster had the fire spread.

The following crimes were reported: 1 burglary in Bowleys Lane; 1 vehicle theft in Bowleys Lane; 1 attempted burglary in Didcott Lane; 1 mobile phone theft from a public house in the village.
Please take extra care of your loved ones, pets, homes, possessions and vehicles and please report any incidents to the Police.  If you have any information re the above, please contact the Police – 0116 222 2222.

The next Parish Council meetings will be held on 2 Sept and 7 Oct – all are welcome to attend.

Our new programme for the 2010/11 season has been published and is available on the village web site, www.applebymagna.org.uk  (look under Community, Village Groups).  The first film, on Fri 8 Oct, is The Last Station, starring Helen Mirren.  As usual this will be shown in the Church Hall at 2.30pm and 8pm.  To find out more about membership and guest ticket options, contact the secretary Marilyn Dunkelman, 01530 270899 or marilyn @ applebymagna.org.uk. New members are made very welcome, and although pre-booking is helpful it is not essential – you can just turn up on the night.

Notes of Thanks

Richard and Chris Denson would like to thank everyone who has sent cards, telephoned, enquired and visited during Chris’ illness. The community has given us both tremendous support and we have been overwhelmed by the kindness shown to both of us during this time.
