Parish News February 2012

Appleby Magna Parish Council News

The Parish Council is replacing the village notice boards with smart, easier to use ones. The notice board in Rectory Lane will be replaced and a new notice board will be erected outside the Doctors' Surgery in Top Street - this will be dedicated to Mr Ken Colver, and will have an open section for public use. The existing notice board next to the Post Office will be open for public use.

The Parish Councillors wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.

If you see or hear of any suspicious or anti-social behaviour, please report it to the Police using 101, 0116 2222222 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The next Parish Council meeting will be held on 2nd February 2012 @ 7.30pm in the Stables Community Room, Sir John Moore School – all are welcome to attend.

February’s film on Friday 10th is Le Quattro Volte, an Italian film set in the beautiful Calabrian hills.  It’s a quiet, thoughtful, humorous film about the life of an old shepherd (so no car chases this month) which has won several international awards.  Showings are at the usual times of 2.30pm (with an interval) and 8pm (no interval) in Appleby Church Hall.  Guests are very welcome.

You can see our full programme on the Appleby Magna web site under Village Groups, or for more information contact Marilyn Dunkelman (01530 270899 or 07770 957963, marilyn @ applebymagna.org.uk) or Sonia Liff (01530 272327).

Appleby Church Building Repairs
Our 14th Century church is in need of urgent high-level repairs to the spire, tower and south roof due to crumbling stonework and inadequate rainwater collection. We need to re-build the top 5.5 metres of the spire, replace crumbling stone and mortar, replace the tower roof, replace tower rainwater pipes, replace/repair oak louvres, replace the bird guards, add south aisle gable gutters and add a new ladder parallel to the ancient medieval one.

Whilst the scaffolding is up we also wish to paint and re-gild the clock faces, re-gild the weathervane and repair some glazing.

We plan to carry out the repairs from August to December after the building work at the Black Horse Inn is hopefull compleated, so there will be less traffic congestion, and after the planned weddings.

Thanks go to the following trusts who have granted/pledged funds: English Heritage/Heritage Lottery Fund, Wolfson Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, Headley Trust, Edith Murphy Foundation, Jack Patston Charitable Trus, Allchurches Trust Limited, Leicester Historic Churches Trust, Manifold Trust, Veneziana Fund, Alan Evans Memorial Trust and Mr & Mrs F. of Stonewall Park Charitable Trust. Thanks alos go to those individuals who have given donations and who have helped or supported our fundraising events.

Appleby Coffee Morning, Wed Feb 29th 10.30am-noon

2011 ended with a bang - over 250 happy people celebrated Christmas and New Year with us with fantastic performances from two local bands the Hedge Pigs and the Decade Runners. It wa sgreat to see families out together on New Years Eve - and the kids especially enjoyed the chill out area for when they got a bit tired!! We had a special treat watching the new Joel Wildgoose video release on the big screen - followed by Big Ben and the fire works! Thanks to all our volunteers and staff that made these events special. Let us know if you want the same again for next year!

2012 Plans
Plans for 2012 are already underway. We have a broad program (sic) of music, theatre and community events throughout the year including The Gala which is set for the 7th/8th July. We hope to have live music, fun and games, Open air Songs of Praise, Football tournament and have a go at making a Guiness World Record!! Watch this space! If you want to get involved call the office and join our friendly team of volunteers that are planning the event.

New Community Clubs
We welcome back all our regular clubs and users and we are pleased that two new groups will be starting soon - Midlands Football Academy for boys and girls aged 4-12 starting on Saturdays and a fitness club - run by My Fitness Family on a Tuesday evening (subject to numbers). We are also hoping to start a Community Gospel choir - call the office if you want more info.

Musical Events
Two events for your diaries are Moishes Bagel Sunday 19th Feb and Forro Porro Fri Feb 24th. Bother brilliant musicians and great family fun. Discounts are available if you book both together. Check out our website for further information.

The website has just been updated with a promotional video for our recording studio, Studio 46, take a look as it makes a great alternative for a birthday party where you can make your own CD and or DVD with friends.
