Development Survey Results
February 2014: Following the disappointingly low response to the survey on this web site, an independent door-to-door survey was commissioned on the village's response to the recent development proposals. The results, from an independent market research organisation, are available here (pdf). It shows a clear majority of households in Appleby are opposed to the scale of developments proposed.

October 2013: We are pleased to announce that the new Team Vicar for Appleby Magna is Revd. Sue Bradley.
Housing Development Proposals in Appleby
Developers are proposing to submit planning applications for housing developments around the village. The Parish Council held a sub-group meeting with the developers and representatives from the village on 14th August and the notes from that meeting are available on the Parish Council page. The village environment group, Appleby Environment, have information on their web page here and there is also information on the village Facebook page.
High Speed Rail and Appleby
Update August 2013: Consultation on HS2 is now open. You can add your opinion at www.hs2.org.uk/phase-two/route-consultation.
Update: The issue of HS2 was discussed at the meeting of the local Community Forum in Ashby on 5th March. More information.
The proposed route for the second phase of HS2 has been announced, and if it is accepted the line will pass between Appleby Magna village and the M42. This is the beginning of a long process which starts with consultations on the proposed line, and local MP Andrew Bridgen is opposed to it. Here are some links to find out more:

Appleby Environment issued a statement in the Parish News, and the Parish Council discussed the issue at their meetings on 7th February and 7th March (minutes of the last meeting).
Sports in Appleby Going Strong!
As the Parish Council work with the Cricket Club and Football Club to provide new facilities on the recreation ground, the Cricket Club hopes to continue last year's success and is already preparing for the new season. Sunday net sessions take place at Ibstock Community Centre - details on their web site.
The Club plays in divisions 1 and 3 of the Leicestershire Senior League. They have a side in the Loughborough Evening League, and the junior section have has sides playing league and cup cricket in the Leicestershire Youth Cricket League.

Appleby in the News (in 1877!)
We have received permission from the British Newspaper Archive to publish clippings from the Leicester Chronicle and Tamworth Herald dated between 1877 and 1950. Thanks to Chris Bee's hard work in sourcing and preparing these you can read them on our history site. They include the Black Horse fire, the joining of two parish councils to become Appleby Magna PC, plenty of deaths and scandals and the inaugural meeting of the WI. Be prepared to spend some time...! Your Scout Group Needs You!
Appleby & Measham Scouts are having a recruitment drive - for anyone aged between 5 and 75. As well as encouraging young people to join they would like more adults - as leaders in uniform, section helpers, as parent helpers, or as community volunteers maintaining the scout hut grounds and looking after the buildings and equipment.
Youngsters can join the Beavers at 5 years, moving on to Cubs at 8, Scouts at 10½ and on to become Young leaders between 14-18 years.

No. 7 Bus to Disappear - County Council Survey on its replacement
UPDATE April 2013: The County Council have announced that a decision will not be made on the fate of the No. 7 until December 2013 and any alteration will not occur before
February 2014
As part of the county council cutbacks, the No. 7 bus is to be replaced by a much reduced on-demand service. The council is conducting a survey on how best to provide this replacement service - details here. The leaflet about the consulation is also available here as a pdf. The consultation period ends on 9th July.
The suggested replacement service will only run from Snarestone to Ashby via Appleby and Measham, not to Twycross and Nuneaton as the No. 7 does. Note that this consultation is about the details of the new service, not whether we want to keep the No.7 or not - that bit is a fait accompli.

Appleby Magna Sports and Recreation Club has started a new club: Appleby Runners. The club is for adults and children to have a go at all levels of running, with the emphasis on an informal and friendly atmosphere.
The club was launched on Sunday 31st March with over 30 runners, ages from 5 to 50, walking, jogging and running a mile in aid of Sport Relief.

Appleby Achieves!
Appleby has had great success in the Leicestershire Village Achievement awards, run by the Rural Community Council. Appleby Environment's Thermal Imaging project won the main prize in the Cleaner Greener Village category, and there were gold and silver awards for the Sir John Moore Foundation in the Community Hall and Community categories. A Son of the Rectory - Now Available in Print
In October 2010 we published a new extended digital edition of Aubrey Moore's A Son of the Rectory, which gives an account of Aubrey's life growing up in the Old Rectory in the early 20th Century and describes the village, its people, its buildings and everyday life of the time. First published in 1982, and long out of print, we added previously unpublished material and an extra chapter by Aubrey's son, Peter Moore.

Local Community Forum - Have Your Say
Community forums are for people to raise and discuss local issues with policymakers from the councils, police and health services. Appleby is part of the Ashby, Measham and Moira Community Forum which meets quarterly. Anyone can go along to these meetings to raise questions, or you can raise issues through the Community forum web site

Appleby Magna website is run by Information Byway, a not-for-profit organisation, and is maintained by volunteers. Since 1998 the site has published regular news about the village and put together extensive information about its history.
We welcome contributions, but are unable to answer individual questions relating to family history. You can use the Appleby Discussion Board, which has been operating for some time as a Family History information board. Here you can ask questions or discuss any aspect of Appleby Magna's society or history, so if you haven't seen it already do have a look at it
